This skip chic collection for RoomService Gallery is a direct result from time spent in local recycling points around Barcelona.

The A(dd)Y(our)O(wn) lighting range gives everyone the chance to be part designer, part manufacturer. Made from rebar and natural rubber, the lights are designed without lampshades to encourage the re-use and re-cycle of everyday objects from garden, house or street. For Roomservice Design Gallery Ryan fitted the lights with a series of iconic Spanish objects salvaged in the streets of Barcelona such as fruit crates, olive oil tins and pickle jars.

The result is a collection of benches, tables and stools made from salvaged timber with built-in planters, allowing the staff to cultivate a range of herbs and plants right next to the restaurant.

The commission forms part of a revamp of the Terrace Bar & Food based on sustainable principles.

“Ryan’s sustainability ethos corresponds directly with what we are aiming to achieve here” says Vicky Falconer-Pritchard, Catering Manger at the National Theatre.

With the NT recently joining the Sustainable Restaurant Association, Vicky is co-ordinating many of the changes that the Terrace Bar & Food is making in order to become more sustainable in as many ways as possible. The ethical approach encompasses all aspects of the restaurant – from the choice of spirits and soft drinks behind the bar, to the composting of food waste, to the furniture on the terrace.

The Terrace Bar & Food is situated on the second level of the National Theatre – a Grade 2 listed building, where one can still see the construction history in the walls of the building with its detailed grain textures of the wooden formwork.

“It was this detail that gave me the inspiration for the construction of the furniture. I wanted the furniture to look like it had been made from the very planks reclaimed from the original construction of the National Theatre. I wanted the furniture to have a sense of belonging” says Frank.

Placing the units on castor wheels helped give the final pieces a closer connection to the space, restaurant and building and allows this rooftop garden cafe to be continuously re-configure depending on the occasion and season.
Further Frank wanted to include a living element to the collection, a place where bees and plants can be apart of the furniture. So don’t be surprised to find some of your cocktail ingredients growing right next to you in one of the planter benches.

We got a fantastic response, which encouraged us to extend our range and we are now producing cork covers for many of the new smart pads coming out.

Ryan Frank

Before long a crew of presenters and cameramen showed up at my London studio for a day of shooting.

The first half the day we filmed in the Geffrye Museum and the 2nd half took place in my studio and workshop.

The end result was a family of large, fat and small Hackney style shelves all displaying the sexy merchandise Nudge has on offer, which is a mix of eco clothing, furniture and accessories.

Besides the display furniture…. you can also find my full retail collection on display in the heart of Helsinki, including Isabella & Enzo stools, Zilka clothes hangers, TAPE cork accessory range and The Hackney Shelf.

This project titled ‘The March of the Chairs’ documents the travel of abandoned London street furniture crossing the hot Spanish desert in search of a place called ‘Planet Glunk’…..

Not so far away where the dusty wind blows
and the bluster bush kinda grows
one may find, if you are lucky, a meandering flock
staggering around a dainty rock.
these hapless chairs stagger and search for a place called Planet Glunk
a place said to be, made up mostly of random junk
the word on the street is, junk on Planet G
Is an ideal place to be…
A place of zero waste, which is exactly to the marching chairs taste.

Winding along the dusty road
In a relentless insect-like mode
These pioneering stools continually seek and search
For a wholesome place to perch.
So follow this march, if you dare, to the land of Planet Glunk
An awesome place for regular junk….

I also had a few furniture commissions on the go…

One was a memorial bench for a regeneration consultancy called Renaisi based in Shoreditch East London, and the other from a private client to design and build a giant farmhouse table.

I decided to make use of this valuable material source ….below is the result - strong, sturdy, salvaged free-range furniture.

Part of the brief was to make the table ´flatpack´..... So it was designed so the legs are able to be un-bolted for easy transport.
